by Rob de Vos

Amerila nigropunctata (Bethune-Baker, 1908)

[Rhodogastria nigropunctata Bethune-Baker, 1908] (holotype (TL: Ekeikei, PNG) in BMNH)

Similar species

Amerila nigropunctata at first sight resembles A. crokeri very much but can easily be distinguished by the red underside of the abdomen while in crokeri this is white (see pictures below). The hindwing of crokeri is for the greater part subhyaline while in nigropunctata it is opaque dark brown. The white basal field on the forewing of both species are differently shaped and the forewing costa is more arched in nigropunctata than in crokeri. Furthermore the black dots dorsally on the thorax are much larger in nigropunctata.

Distribution

STATUS: In Papua a rare species. It seems to prefer lowland or coastal areas but in PNG also known from mountainous areas. The wide gaps in its distribution in Papua are remarkable.

PAPUA LOCALITIES: New Guinea: Asike, Mt. Bembab (Arfak), Depapre, Genyem, Merauke, Noordwijk (Jayapura), Sentani, Tami River, Yemang (Jayapura). Details in gazetteer.

EXTERNAL DISTRIBUTION: Papua New Guinea.
