Species belonging to Elhamma and Aenetus are rather easy to identify but most Oxycanus species are very difficult to distinguish from each other. Many species show a wide range of colour varieties which are in many species overlapping. Oxycanus specimens must therefore be identified by the male genitalia of which drawings are depicted on the species pages. In most cases it is not necessary to dissect the genitalia from the abdomen, just brushing away the hairy scales from the genitalia should be sufficient to show the often dentated rim on the tegumen which is specific. Mounted specimens on the pictures shown in this website are all genitalia checked for their identification.
