The Hawkmoths (SPHINGIDAE, Macroglossinae) of Papua Indonesia
by Willem Hogenes
Macroglossum lineatum Lucas, 1891 [stat. nov.]
Taxonomical note
This taxon is treated here as bona species and not as subspecies of Macroglossum prometheus Boisduval, [1875] since there is proof that both are indeed separated. The genitalia of both taxa are different and there is a gap in the distribution area of both.
Distribution
STATUS: Widely distributed in New Guinea and rather common.
PAPUA LOCALITIES: Moor & Mambor Islands: Hariti, Moor, Ratewi; New Guinea: Jayapura, Mapia (Kobowre Mts.*), Sorong, Tami River. Details in gazetteer.
EXTERNAL DISTRIBUTION: Timor, Kai Islands, Papua New Guinea, North and East Australia.
DATA SOURCES: KSP, RMNH, ZMAN, Website Sphingidae of Southeast Asia.
* note: On the distribution maps of "Sphingidae of Southeast Asia" we noticed frequently marks on the Mapia Islands, North of Numfor. By experience in collections, however, we think this is a misunderstanding and this should be the village Mapia, Southeast of Nabire in the Kobowre Mountains, which is much more often visited by collectors.
