The Hawkmoths (SPHINGIDAE, Macroglossinae) of Papua Indonesia
by Willem Hogenes
Theretra alecto (Linnaeus, 1758)
Only one specimen is known from New Guinea. It was collected by R. Straatman in 1946 in Hollandia (now Jayapura). It is possible that this specimen was imported on a ship in the harbour of Hollandia but we will never know for sure.
STATUS: Outside New Guinea a common species but in New Guinea only known by one record! Probably an introduced specimen by transport.
PAPUA LOCALITIES: New Guinea: Jayapura (Hollandia). Details in gazetteer.
EXTERNAL DISTRIBUTION: A wide range, from the Mediterranean through the Orient to the Moluccas.
