The Scoliidae species (Hymenoptera) of Papua Indonesia

Taxonomic notes

Campsomeris f. ferrugineipes and C. l. loriae were placed in the genus Phalerimeris Betrem, 1967 by Krombein (1968). The status of the genus Phalerimeris is confused but clarified by Argaman.

Bradley (1964) listed and annotated the Scoliid types of Fabricius kept in Copenhagen. He lists Tiphia annulata Fabricius, 1793 as Campsomeris (Phaleromeris) annulata (Fabr.) without further explanations as to the establishment of this till now unknown subgenus Phaleromeris. Argaman’s key indicates that he considered Bradley’s listing the establishment of the genus Phaleromeris with Scolia annulata as type species. Betrem (1966) in a joint paper with Bradley on the type specimens of Burmeister mentions “Two females of Campsomeris (Phalerimeris) annulata (Fabricius)”. Bradley states in the introduction that “Phalerimeris is a manuscript subgeneric name that soon will be established by Betrem.”

Betrem (1967) in a paper on the natural groups of Campsomeriella established the subgenus Annulimeris with Scolia annulata Fabricius as type species. In this paper he mentions some differences in the genitalia between the taxon Phalerimeris Betrem and Annulimeris. He apparently withdrew the manuscript subgeneric name mentioned by Bradley & Betrem (1966) without stating this.

Betrem (1967) in a joint paper with Bradley on the Scoliid types of Frederick Smith established the subgenus Phalerimeris with Campsomeris phalerata (de Saussure, 1858) as type species.

Argaman considers annulata and phalerata to belong to different genera that I consider acceptable.
Annulata is placed by him in the genus Phaleromeris Bradley, 1964. Annulimeris is considered a junior synonym.
The new genus Batalanga was established by Argaman with Elis phalerata de Saussure as type species.

The structure and genitalia of ferrugineipes and loriae are very similar and agree with the characteristics given by Bradley and Betrem (1967) for the genus Phalerimeris.
The parameres have an angular circumference and in that aspect similar to those of Batalanga phalerata.

Therefore ferrugineipes and loriae are placed temporarily in the genus Batalanga Argaman, 1996. At a later stage the establishment of a new genus for both species will be considered.
